The assay method is ultraselective, even if the miRNA differs from the target sequence by one base. We are using this method now on samples from prostate cancer patients from Dr. Manish Kohli, our collaborator at Huntsman Cancer Institute.
We demonstrate ~3000x enhancement of light collection from quantum dot fluorescent tags, and then use the tags to detect individual cancer-related miRNA molecules from serum, with a detection limit of only 10 attomolar.
