Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal published a piece outlining various AI fraud scams hitting families the hardest, including investment scams, government impersonators, romance fraud, and tech support schemes.
At @AdaptiveSec we sat down with victims of each of these attacks and heard firsthand what it sounds and feels like to be on the receiving end. We also spoke with legal experts who have spent years tracking how these crimes unfold and what to do when they happen.
We compiled these interviews, along with interactive exercises like a live AI call and a “make your own deepfake” module, into a free 20-minute course to send to your loved ones.
Many of the victims we spoke with lost money they spent a lifetime building and felt too ashamed to tell even their closest family members what happened. Because of that shame, fewer than 1 in 10 of these attacks ever get reported.
Even if you do not think the people in your life are at risk, I encourage you to send the WSJ piece or Adaptive course anyway. I’ve linked both below.
California's population grew 0.4% in the last decade.
The number of state employees grew 24.5%.
Total state spending grew 48%, inflation adjusted.
You have to ask - where did all the money go?
Gary Schildhorn was driving to work one morning when he got a call from his son.
"Dad, I've been in an accident. I hit a pregnant woman. They've arrested me."
His son asked him to call the number of a court-assigned attorney.
"I just met with your son. He didn't pass the sobriety test. The court set bail at $120,000."
But Gary's instincts kicked in. He paused, something felt off. The first voice on the phone wasn't his son at all. It was AI-generated, cloned from just a few seconds of audio. Gary was the intended victim of a deepfake attack.
Unfortunately, he is not alone. Millions of older adults are targeted by sophisticated scams each year, causing an estimated $81 billion in losses for Americans over 60 years old.
That’s why I am proud to announce that Adaptive Security is launching a free training course designed to protect older adults from AI-powered scams.
The training features real interviews with 5 brave individuals targeted by AI, crypto, and impersonation fraud, as well as interactive exercises like a live AI call and a “make your own deepfake” module.
The course also includes guidance from Brady Finta of the National Elder Fraud Coordination Center (NEFCC) and leading cybersecurity lawyer Edward Chang from Morrison Foerster. Brady and Ed share their own helpful tips, along with the best law enforcement resources and reporting channels available to those who have been targeted.
The course is available completely for free and can be taken in less than 20 minutes. We’ve made it easy to share with any older parent, friend, or neighbor. Because no one should have to learn these lessons the hard way.
