We're on the ground in southern Mexico for two weeks with @P4HR and @LasAmericasIAC to interview deported immigrants. We've heard heartbreaking stories from people torn away from their families after decades in the U.S. and stranded with nothing in a country they don't know.

I've been following Cengiz' phenomenal work in Iraq and the Middle East for years before we both somehow ended up in El Paso and became friends. Consider donating to his Kickstarter to help fund his first monograph on the destruction faced by Mosul in the struggle against ISIS.
Climate change and border deterrence are coalescing to cause a surge in migrant deaths in El Paso. I write about some of the victims, and how the local community is responding here. 👇
Out today from @brianelmoremd: ”For the migrants who cross the border wall outside of Sunland Park, the desert in many places only stretches a few hundred yards ... They’ve reached the promised land, but they’re struck down in sight of help.” https://t.co/708M20uJp6
“If Abbott truly cared about undue costs, he wouldn’t add yet another administrative task to a state health agency that is already resource-strapped.”
@GovAbbott latest order mandating hospitals to collect immigration info will only hurt Texans 👇🏽.

If Abbott was really interested in reducing healthcare costs, he would end Operation Lone Star. Policies of deterrence like OLS send migrant patients, including women and children, to hospitals with costly traumatic injuries.
This will be a disaster for border communities like El Paso. Most impacted will be valued tax-paying members of our community who will now be fearful of seeking care as they are asked about their immigration status.
.@GovAbbott ordered Texas public hospitals to begin reporting costs of treating undocumented immigrants. Immigrant rights advocates in El Paso say the move has far-reaching impacts including making undocumented immigrants fearful of seeking medical care.

Returning home from a migrant clinic in Juarez, I can’t help but reflect on how barbarous we make the process of migrating. On how 'success' as measured by reduced migrant numbers really just means the brutalization of more bodies before they every reach our border.
Two patients today with traumatic injuries-- one from Mexican immigration officials, enlisted by the US to stop migrants from ever reaching the border, and one from their cartel kidnappers.
Every week, our cross border program provides critical know-your-rights presentations, education about the policy & practice using CBP One, & aid to the most vulnerable in Ciudad Juárez.
This type of educational support is crucial amid ever-changing immigration policies. 🧵
UPDATE: Trip through sewers to cross border is known as VIP package. Business thrives thanks to US govt playing politics w human lives, turning over border security to mx cartels. Latest #puentenewscollaborative w @Stevelfisher @USATODAY https://t.co/bloCyKXgPi
We are proud to have partnered with @WitnessBorder, @quixotecenter, @JuliaNeusner, @ImmDef, & @redfranciscana on "DANGER IN THE DARIÉN GAP: Human Rights Abuses and the Need for Humane Pathways to Safety."
The findings provide further evidence of U.S. deterrence policies … /1 🧵
In my latest piece, I talk about the escalating consequences of 'Operation Lone Star' on the migrants caught between concertina wire and cartel.
Read it here 👇
“Stories of violence and brutality spilled out as the weary migrants were eager to take the opportunity to share their traumas with sympathetic Americans who were not pointing weapons at them. ...” https://t.co/pLbj5oPNmt
Biden campaigned on a promise to restore the asylum-system. Not only is this new policy a betrayal of our country's values, it's a betrayal of his own promises. On the border, we'll continue to do our best to keep people from dying despite the intentions of this administration.
Biden's new border policy will cause death in the borderlands, no better than Title 42 instituted under Trump. By stopping processing at the border, increasingly desperate migrants will turn to the wall, the desert or the concertina wire. Death and disabling injuries will follow.
We've already seen our first heat deaths for the season in migrants. As we enter our hottest months in the borderlands, I expect we will see many more with this policy.
By refusing to process migrants, the National Guard is creating conditions that expose migrants –including children-- to imminent bodily harm while soldiers in uniform watch on, doing nothing. This is a stain on American ideals and values. (2/2)
Hemmed in by cartels and concertina wire, US National Guard and Mexican Immigration officials, the migrants we treated yesterday along the Rio in Juarez were among the most desperate I've encountered since I've been working in Juarez. (1/2)
