please do not ever question filipinos and their talent because you could find a kid on any random street in the philippines who could outsing, outdance, and outperform even without access to proper training or resources. we’ve never been short of talent, and this isn’t about competing with other countries or seeking their validation. it’s about recognizing the wealth of talent we’ve always had and creating more opportunities for it to thrive. filipino talent has always deserved a bigger stage, and that recognition is long overdue.

Actress #MarisRacal won her first Gawad Urian for her lead performance in the critically acclaimed film “Sunshine,” marking another milestone in her acting career.

At the 49th Gawad Urian, Maris expressed her happiness over the win while celebrating fellow awardees recognized for their contributions to Philippine cinema.

“Overwhelmed ako ngayon, sobrang happy ko para sa lahat ng winners at siyempre happy ako dahil may iuuwi akong Urian (trophy),” she said.

Inspite of earning one of the most respected acting honors in Philippine cinema, Maris said she felt more excited than pressured by the recognition.

“Wala… walang pressure mas excited pa ako,” the actress shared.

Maris also dedicated the win to her supporters, whom she affectionately calls the Maristellers, as well as the filmmakers and critics who appreciated her performance.

“Sa lahat ng naniniwala sa akin, sa Maristellers, may Urian na tayo, finally! Thank you sa suporta n’yo. Thank you sa Manunuri, sa mga teachers at sa lahat ng naka-appreciate ng performance ko sa ‘Sunshine’ para sa inyong lahat ‘to,” she said.

Directed by Antoinette Jadaone and produced by Project 8 Projects and ANIMA Studios, “Sunshine” follows a 19-year-old gymnast hopeful whose dream of joining the national team is complicated by an unexpected pregnancy shortly before the national team tryouts.

The film explores the difficult choices and societal pressures surrounding unwanted pregnancy as Sunshine searches for abortion pills and encounters a mysterious girl who eerily resembles her in thoughts and behavior.

Maris’ performance earned recognition beyond the local film scene. “Sunshine” won the Crystal Bear for Best Film in the Generation competition at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival in 2025. That same year, Maris received the Best Lead Performance award at the Pinoy Rebyu Awards.

Her first Urian win adds to the recognition she has received for portraying a young woman navigating an unexpected pregnancy and the life changing decisions that follow.

Maris also offered a glimpse of her plans for next year, revealing that she would return to television while preparing for other projects.

“Marami for next year pero for now, naka focus ako sa isang bagay, back to series muna tayo. I can’t say much pero very excited,” she teased.

With her first Gawad Urian secured, Maris is set to return to television as she prepares for her next projects, following a year marked by recognition for her work in “Sunshine.”
