Once work flows from the GC down to the subs, what was bought and what was installed goes dark.

“We don’t even know if all these materials have been utilized at the end of the day in that building.”

[Bricks & Bytes @bricksbytespod]

Eldar Sadikov’s co-founder had specified materials on high-rise projects in the US, Dubai and Europe, then watched a facade metal get swapped for something else with no way to trace it.

Does your company have an AI strategy? Or a productivity strategy? They’re not the same thing.

[Bricks & Bytes @bricksbytespod]

Nobody needs an AI strategy. Everyone needs a productivity strategy.

That’s the view of Puneet Raj, CEO of Fieldwire, and I think it’s the most useful thing said at the whole event.

[Bricks & Bytes @bricksbytespod]

The reason it matters is adoption. Construction software has a long history of tools that get bought and never used. Adoption in the field and the office is what decides success or failure.

Who’s your reverse mentor? If the answer is nobody, that might be worth fixing.

A 23 year old student gave the CEO of Fieldwire 10 things his company should do better with AI.

Puneet Raj calls them reverse mentors. He’s open about being on the older side when it comes to AI, and says Gen Z gets it natively in a way he never will.

[Bricks & Bytes @bricksbytespod]

So he took on mentors nearly 20 years his junior. One of them, a Berkeley student who hadn’t graduated yet, looked at Fieldwire and handed him a list.

He described it as stunning. Not the list itself, but how fast the world is moving.

Before Miter, contractors had to choose between legacy construction ERPs that don't file taxes and generic payroll tools that don't understand construction.

"If we could go back in time, I think we'd have warned ourselves about how hard payroll was gonna be."

Connor from Miter on why they started with construction payroll, the most painful problem they could find for contractors.

It’s a useful way to think about where procurement money actually leaks.

“If 600 billion is total material spending in the US, probably 10 to 20% of that could be more efficient, which is 60 to 120 billion annually.”

Eldar Sadikov breaks the number down into admin overhead, rogue spend at retail prices, and crews sitting idle waiting for materials.

The incoming CEO of Fieldwire told his team he knew nothing and needed six months to learn.

So Puneet Raj started as an intern. He rotated through departments, demoed the product to customers, tried to sell it, and went on site to understand why people were paying for it.

[Bricks & Bytes @bricksbytespod]

His reasoning was simple. He didn’t want to make wrong decisions as a new CEO on a product he didn’t yet understand.

I don’t think many leaders would do this. Fewer would admit it on stage.

[Bricks & Bytes @bricksbytespod]

How many tools does your company run? I’d bet most people reading this don’t know the real number.

324 pieces of software in one construction company.

That’s what a CIO of a large general contractor told Puneet Raj, CEO of Fieldwire. And it’s why he says no software can exist in isolation anymore.

[Bricks & Bytes @bricksbytespod]

The interesting part is where he thinks this goes next. Not just APIs passing data between tools, but agents from one piece of software operating inside another, with the right permissions and security.
