The very first Ferris wheel — built specifically for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair — was 264 feet tall. Each gondola was the size of a train car, and could fit about 60 people.

#tbt - After making its debut on @uchicago’s Midway Plaisance in 1893, the world’s first Ferris Wheel was moved to Lincoln Park, where it remained for 5 years before being relocated to St. Louis. This footage (by the Lumiere Brothers) is among the first ever film shot in Chicago.
