When we speak in terms of “goodness and badness”, we are restricted to a subjective tug of war. “Evil” is a judgment. Where one directs one’s empathy is objective. What we think of as evil is really just the absence of empathy. The spectrum of narcissism holds all we think of as evil.

You’re almost there. This is ENTIRELY a public mental health crisis. Narcissism and Trump’s sociopathy, as shared psychosis, is what you’re actually describing. Barbarism is narcissistic dehumanization. The reason we don’t have an actionable understanding IS the entire game. You’re staring right at the cause of all human suffering - but narcissistic interests block a wider understanding, because it is a threat to their power and control.
