By a 5-0 vote, the Multnomah County Commission today APPROVED THE SAFE SCHOOL ZONE ORDINANCE, an ordinance I sponsored with Commissioner Moyer that prohibits mobile distribution of needles within 1,000 feet of schools.
As a mom, I know that this is a reasonable and important standard to set so that kids can walk to school safely. I want to thank all the parents, school districts, local businesses, and city leaders who supported and helped set this common sense standard. Special thanks to Commissioner Moyer who cosponsored the ordinance with me and to Sen. Reynolds who reached out to ask me to bring a County ordinance forward until statewide action is possible. Thanks to the parents, neighbors, Friends of Couch Park, Stadiumhood, mayors @MayorKWilson@GreshamMayor, school district superintendents. Reps. Tran, Isadore and Elmer for testifying in support of the county action.

“HOPE FOR ALL” …that’s the message greeted me and all who enter the Portland Rescue Mission-run Shepherd’s Door, a critical women, mom and kids’ shelter in East Portland Had a chance to visit with staff and guests recently when I visited this shelter which provides a HOLISTIC APPROACH TO ADDRESSING ADDICTION AND ROOT CAUSES OF HOMELESSNESS in a welcoming space with a supportive community and workforce programming (including a delicious catering service!) and a preschool. They’re getting our most vulnerable onto crucial housing and treatment pathways. It takes a village! @pdxmission
RECOGNITION IS DUE!! Day in and day out THEY ARE HERE FOR OUR COMMUNITY! 👏 👏 👏 Thank you and appreciation to all our EMS workers during Emergency Medical Services Week! Commissioner Vince Jones Dixon and I proclaimed this week as EMS Week to recognize emergency medical services is a vital public service and the lifesaving care provided to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “We know that access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury and it fills healthcare gaps by providing important, out-of-hospital care, including preventative medicine, follow-up care, and access to telemedicine”
As the leaders of the Local Public Safety Coordinating Committee, Commissioner Jones Dixon and I send our THANKS and appreciation.

At today’s joint City-County meeting, I called for accountability for the Home Forward CEO who had left thousands of housing units vacant while traveling extensively using public funds. With this news tonight, it’s time to get those vacant units filled. Way past time!
OPEN HOUSE — NEIGHBORS and COMMUNITY MEMBERS had a chance to take a look at the new ABSTINENCE-BASED RECOVERY SHELTER pods that will be opening this spring on 82nd. There will be certified recovery mentors, peer support, and certified drug and alcohol counseling, and they will be prioritizing folks in the nearby Southeast community who are able to honor the recovery commitments. There are shower, laundry, and bathrooms on-site as well as a kitchenette and storage. On Friday I had a chance to talk to neighbors who participated in the public meetings and good neighbor agreement process during the design and construction of the site. This site was purchased by the County before I joined the commission and is just now ready to open. This took way too long and there are many lessons to be learned, BUT I am glad there will be a place for recovery. #Recovery
What an amazing turn out for New Year in the Park, celebrating an important cultural festival, right here in Glenhaven Park Portland! There were so many amazing food vendors (in fact the food was so good, there was HUGE demand=lines) artists and community tablers including Mult Co Preschool4All; beautiful traditional dances, and Papaya Salad making contest (check out the short video clip). 👏👏👏 to founder Saron Khut, emcee Sophorn Cheang, Aurianna, Toc and all the volunteers at the event and on the planning committee for the New Year in the Park and the Cambodian-American Community of Oregon for putting together such a vibrant festival and for inviting me!

Happening this morning at Big Pink! Grand opening of the UpStart Collective — a room full of entrepreneurs and founders looking to be the engine to drive job growth and spur economic growth right here.
Big Pink’s Jeff Swickard, along with visionary entrepreneurs and founders led by Upstart Collective’s Josh Carter are reimagining the future of Portland and our downtown cityscape.
Officially cutting the ribbon with Josh Carter, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson City Commissioner Eric Zimmerman and joined by State Senator Mark Meek Technology Association of Oregon President and CEO, Warren (Skip) Newberry Jr. and Oregon Entrepreneurs Network President and CEO, Cara Turano.
Excited to celebrate this new space where entrepreneurs can collaborate, tap each others networks and expertise and launch start ups and new businesses. This is about building a community – and that’s what UpStart Collective is doing.
This is how we move forward – not just for downtown Portland – but supporting innovation, entrepreneurs, and local businesses in all our neighborhoods.
This is exactly what the city, county and state needs right now!

Yes, it’s the Texas firm, Procedeo, that just pulled in the $61 MILLION contract. Last Spring as a PPS Board member I introduced a Lobbying Transparency Policy to provide greater transparency for who is attempting to influence PPS staff and Board members. This is a basic good governance measure and standard practice for most large government jurisdictions. The Board adopted it on September 9th. On November 30, when PPS still had not created the Lobbying Registry, I asked staff where it was. No response. Asked again on Dec 6, no response until a week later when I was sent the link (https://t.co/KnjirCoVaB) and informed it was live on December 11th. A few days later, one registrant posted: Procedeo. Interesting that the registry appeared months after passage of the policy and only AFTER the Procedeo contract was approved by the Board on a 5-2 vote with the public having one day to review the contract.
BREAKING NEWS: “Early Population Data Predicting Fewer Preschoolers…”
The County's Preschool for All program needs to deliver on its promise of providing universal access to preschool, AND we also need to have confidence the program is being responsibly managed and voters need to know the program’s plan and projects are rooted in credible data. I have for years raised questions about the demographic data. Reducing the required preschool seats from 11,200 to only 7,500 is a major recalibration.
This changes all of the program’s assumptions and raises questions in the County’s ability to effectively and confidently manage the PFA program. @Oregonian@AustinDeDios
