I was glad to be interviewed for this article to help raise awareness of how many children are grieving in our local communities. One death after another for a Maryland school shows the country’s child grief problem - @washingtonpost https://t.co/2S5nj41kz3
An excellent piece by @CamillaLong that articulates what many people have been saying for the past two years — especially those of us on the ground who have reported and witnessed evidence we will never forget and spoken directly with those who survived the atrocity.
I'm a middle eastern historian. My own family were made refugees. And this is my honest view of the Nakba (“catastrophe”) - the displacement of around 700,000 Palestinian Arabs during the 1947–49 war surrounding the creation of Israel.
A thread. 🧵
Today I visited the Sternberg Centre for Judaism. It was good to see the extraordinary educational, theological and community work taking place there.
But it was impossible to ignore the the distressing truth about Jewish life in Britain today. No parent should have to fear for their child’s safety at school or at worship.
Antisemitism must be opposed without hesitation or qualification. We all share responsibility for challenging hatred wherever we encounter it.

This is really, really bad. Antisemitism has become so normalized that shit like this is happening in the open. It’s unacceptable. We don’t have enough voices calling out the vile propaganda against Jewish Americans.
My favorite passage:
Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, and open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert.
A narrative has taken hold that attacks on Jews in Britain are wrong because they cannot be held responsible for the Israeli govt just because they are Jews. Of course. But they also should not be targeted even if they back the Jewish state’s defence. They do not owe anyone else an explanation to avoid being attacked.
Britain’s Jews need allies, perhaps as never before.
I think they also need people who are not Jewish to say where they stand on this profound cultural problem as we stand together at the edge of the precipice.
I stand with them. I stand with Britain’s Jews.
Marches and banners in the UK calling for ‘intifada’ haven’t helped anyone in Gaza. They’ve put anti-semitism at the heart of identity politics and made this country unsafe for Jews. It’s shameful.
Many of us in Ireland have experienced an awakening.
On 7th & 8th October 2023 I learned the horror of what was happening in Israel. I saw footage & read reports that chilled me to the bone. Every day it seemed to get worse. It was distressing & horrifying and I literally cried as the gratuitous, unhinged violence of H@mas & Gazan's played out in 4k on my phone. I was incredibly affected & I still am.
But what I witnessed in my own country shocked me in a way I've never experienced before. I was speechless at the reactions of so many around me. It was incomprehensible to me that 'these' were my people! It still is.
I was born in Ireland, to an Irish family & had a typical working class upbringing. I went to university here and then left as a young adult to travel. I lived in several different countries over the next 17 years or so. Even though most of my adult life has been outside Ireland, I still remained very close to my family and friends. I returned here with my children 10 years ago. It was a huge adjustment as many things had changed in my absence but within a year or so I settled back into a new life in my old country.
The atrocities of October 7th have ripped a blindfold off my eyes and what I see around me is equally appalling & devastating. I thought I'd come home but I haven't. I've returned to a country so blinded by bigotry & hate, so caught up in propaganda & indoctrination and so willing to loose sight of their humanity because of the false equivalency consistently drawn between the battle of Palestinians for 'their' land & the ongoing battle of Ireland for ours.
My initial response to the overwhelming support of H@mas & the 'innocent' Gazan's was shock that Irish people could be so inhumane. How could they POSSIBLY support Islamic Jihadists who just committed the most vile atrocities against innocent civilians? Then I questioned do they really know what they're saying when they chant 'From the river to the Sea'. How could they be calling for the annihilation of Israel and it's replacement by a super caliphate under sharia law? How could they possibly be so uneducated? Then I saw the overwhelming support for H@mas in Irish media & their regurgitation of every report as fact. There was no due diligence or investigative journalism. Everything the Palestinian Authority or H@mas said was presented as fact. I then watched in horror and fury as our Taoiseach (Prime Minister) announced to the world Irelands recognition of Palestine as a state.
The same day this obscene announcement was made, H@mas released a distressing video of five injured & terrified 19 year old Israeli girls Naama, Agam, Liri, Danielle & Karina. It upset me so much I didn't sleep for days. I posted it so many times in response to people glorifying Ireland's stance that X restricted my account for spamming!
I've posted endlessly on X on the foundation of H@mas, their charter & their obsession with killing Jews. Their use of babies, women & children as human shields. Their deliberate use of hospitals as military bases. Their commandeering of humanitarian aid. The training, arming & financing both they Hezbollah, Houthis & other terrorists receive from Iran. The destruction they brought to Lebanon and the takeover of their country.
I've posted interviews and public addresses given by terrorist leaders where they glorify the murder and annihilation of Jews. Where they loudly promise to repeat October 7 again and again. I've clearly and systematically defended why I stand with Israel without any hysteria or hyperbole and the response from those around me?
Followers stopped following. Friends stopped calling or replying to texts. Interactions with my posts reduced to zero. I've been shunned and ignored because my truth makes people uncomfortable. But that is nothing in comparison to what Israel is enduring. My 💙 is with them today in their fight against Islamic terrorism and it always will.
“You dont have to say anything political, no one's asking you to solve the conflict in the Middle East.
Just say that you stand with your Jewish friends, colleagues, and neighbors against HATRED and DISCRIMINATION”
~ David Schwimmer
"It’s not that our Jewish siblings don’t just feel unsafe, as though this is some failure of psychological strength on their part. They are, in fact, not safe. They are clearly not safe. Not here in the United States. Not in Israel. Not anywhere."

@cmclymer Thank you, thank you for having clarity of mind and speech to explain so clearly the rise of antisemitism everywhere and the lack of safety that we feel as a result. I appreciate you so much!
I know I sound like a broken record, but Candace Owens’s Erika Kirk series is not fun drama, a feud, or a partisan “let them fight,” situation.
It is a one-sided attack that radicalizes her fans and viewers, many of whom are women who are responsible for the education of their children either directly or indirectly.
And it sends them down a rabbit hole of dangerous conspiratorial thinking centered around hatred of Jews.
It has NOTHING to do with holding the Israeli government accountable — in fact, it distracts from holding the Israeli government accountable.
Because Candace focuses on things that do not exist and did not happen…remember her allegation that the French and Israeli governments had organized an operation to assassinate her?
And all of this results in normie moms who would otherwise not be aware of these conspiracies developing a violent hatred of Jews that seeps deep into their consciousness.
That is Candace’s intent, of course, but you should do your part in not mischaracterizing it as some harmless fun or a partisan feud.
And I realize that Erika Kirk, for many reasons, is a controversial figure for liberals/Democrats.
Objectively, she’s being treated unfairly by Candace, who has created and promoted a lie that Erika is part of an elaborate conspiracy to assassinate her husband.
But if you care about Jews, if you have Jews in your life, you should know this does incredible harm to them.
A level of harm that keeps me awake at night because I’m aware of all the ins and outs and how these conspiracies radicalize her fans.
