Surely the same with goals, then? If you tap it in from two yards does it count less? The point of these statistics is the aggregate, that they are not in isolation. If someone has 15-20 assists in a season, they are probably quite good at it, even if one or two of them are 'meagre' assists. Exactly the same with goals, you might get some fluky goals but if you get lots of them, you assume the player is good at it. Data is only really useful when extrapolated and observed for trends and I do feel like more people should understand this.
