My main takeaway from the social media & beyond course is to always consider whether an issue in learning from web 2.0 or social media is a result of the tools or the users. Question who is responsible, and how we can change it or adapt to make it better. #EDU6333
@MPenaAllen Great resource, thanks! I always tell students it is their duty to report poor behavior. I particularly like "If you're aware, share," and "up, not out" which promotes bringing up cases to professional staff and not spreading rumors out #EDU6333
Yikes! Some of these account of what people have done are cringeworthy. Common sense is important. People should really know that anyone could be watching. #EDU6333 https://t.co/0QxNq07gN1
@ITProgramsSCC @MPenaAllen @hannahstromberg What did it for me was watching my friends get into really good schools. I remember seeing a bulletin board with graduation caps with students names and where they wanted to go to school, then admissions facts about some of those schools like GPA. Incentive to succeed #EDU6333
@TimPrata In my office, we created accounts that are "Brit Admissions," or "Sarah Admissions" that we log into to keep in touch with student workers, have facebook live events for prospects, and to post updates to our admissions pages. I think it's a smart move. #EDU6333
@MPenaAllen @hannahstromberg Just a thought, but my S/O games a bunch and oftentimes, dying is what means you've failed in the game. Why do we attached death as the ultimate failure? Is the extreme necessary in providing incentive to win? #EDU6333
Yes, that is the question of the week. Forget "how." Can we even learn without making mistakes before even considering the how? #deep#allofthequestions#EDU6333 https://t.co/hp20zAr0kp
@charcua2school I have the same issue. I always think of the worst case scenario to prepare or prevent failure. I just do not handle failure well, I'll often beat myself up about it #perfectionist#EDU6333
@kmcnallyanderso Not only that, it is also about finding solutions, even multiple, that DO work. So is failing isn't incentive enough, students can experiencing a win in figuring out the right way in their own process. #EDU6333
@hilltory2 I loved this point. The idea that testing is what we use as a basis for assessment and teaching is just not relevant anymore. Especially not with all the resources we have like gamification to teach and learn #EDU6333
@TimPrata I think playing it made me realize just how much we expect information to be handed to us. When I started the game, I waited for a prompt to tell me what to do until I realized I had to figure it out. #EDU6333
@SarahOGrady25 My s/o is a late night gamer. He uses it as a stress reliever from school and work. I wonder if making gaming a way of learning ruins it as a "free time pleasure." EDU6333
I used to consider failing as an end point. Now, failing means that we have allowed ourselves to experiment and the freedom to try again. Gamification can change assessment because it changes the learning environment. We just need to trust that environment #EDU6333
Lure of Labyrinth invited me to experiment and critically think about how to win freely, at my own pace, and using my own strategy. Vicki Davis acknowledges this at the process in gamification and knowing the gaming mechanics #EDU6333.
@ashleyj930 @hannahstromberg@kikizhn https://t.co/gJPjRUGxub This might help. Creative Commons is a licensing entity. Copyright and Licensing are different. Perhaps someday, CC will be in the business of both. Would be a smart move for the industry $$ #onestopshop#EDU6333
@charcua2school@kikizhn It's the difference between the creator and the user. Both protect the creator/owner, licensing outlines the parameters or privileges for users. #EDU6333
@kikizhn Interesting. I see it as one has to come before the other. Before you can license your work (Creative Commons) you should protect with copyright. Copyright > License > Publish > Fair Use. They flow together #EDU6333
@hannahstromberg A lot to learn for sure. Then there is fair use vs. public domain, copyright vs. licensing, etc. Especially is you are the creator, then I suggest hiring a lawyer to navigate it for you! #EDU6333
@MPenaAllen @ashleyj930 Agreed! Kind of like how each student learns how to take out books in the library, we should have this as part of resource learning #EDU6333
