It's a very hard, very uncomfortable topic. But the reality is we have people who are currently educating American children who can't pass literacy tests, who don't have a grasp on basic grammar, who simply aren't equipped to educate. And yet, they're in the classroom.

We haven't been talking enough about how when you have an entire generation that is undereducated, and the people from that generation grow up and become teachers. There are a percentage of those teachers (a not insignificant number) who are they themselves undereducated.

Never forget that in New York they eliminated the literacy exam in 2017. And this exam wasn't for students - it was the literacy exam for TEACHERS. Only 61% could pass it!

I just keep thinking about NHJ's poor daughter who had math as her favorite subject without even knowing she isn't proficient in it. I can't even imagine how devastating that would be to find out and it was all so her mom could stay true to her own warped thinking. Tragic.

This kind of thing is happening in WAY more schools than people realize. And then when some subjects or topics become too difficult, they just stop doing them completely. I still think more people over 45 don't even realize that schools are phasing out spelling tests.

@crousselle Spelling tests are being phased out all over the country. It varies by district, but a lot of schools and districts have gotten rid of them and literally no one is talking about it.

@david_shane and the people nodding along with the insanity and ignoring this reality are people who have degrees in ed, child development, etc. It's completely bonkers! I feel like I'm losing my mind and it scares me how most people have no clue any of this is happening.

Heck, South Carolina just had to pass a law to stop the practice of allowing nothing below a 50 for students (even if they failed to turn in the assignment!)- so teachers can actually be "allowed" to give a zero. https://t.co/5Qe3z3PVZ1

The cumulative impact of moving most assignments to being typed, eliminating spelling tests, not grading assignments, getting rid of cursive, little-to-no reading aloud in the classroom- the impact of all of this is devastating for our students and the future of the country.
