Aquafina and Dasani are tap water.

Aquafina bottles carried the letters P.W.S. for years. Public water source. After a pressure campaign in 2007, Pepsi agreed to spell the words out. Dasani's own description starts with the local water supply, then reverse osmosis, then minerals added back.

About 45% of US bottled water starts as municipal supply. The rest is spring water, which is a separate legal category with its own rules.

Purified is an accurate word. It describes the treatment, not the source.
