RIP Dervan Malcolm, #Jamaican broadcast journalist, radio host, and public speaker best known as producer and host of the current affairs programme Both Sides of the Story on Power 106 FM in Kingston, Jamaica.

Malcolm’s entry into broadcasting grew out of his early success in performing arts. While a student and head boy at Calabar High School, a performance at the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Festival of the Performing Arts drew attention that led to his media debut: he read his first newscast on Power 106 FM on October 24, 1993.

He went on to build a long career with Independent Radio Company, the operator of Power 106 FM and the adult contemporary station Music 99 FM; both later absorbed into the RJRGleaner Communications Group. Over more than three decades with the company, Malcolm held roles including news presenter, news editor, sportscaster, talk show producer, and executive producer of programming.

Since March 2007, he hosted Both Sides of the Story, a current affairs programme he described as furthering a personal mission to educate, empower, enlighten, and encourage entrepreneurship.

He also hosted The Jamaican Diaspora Live Online, a Saturday-morning broadcast focused on issues affecting Jamaicans living abroad, and conducted numerous live broadcasts from diaspora communities internationally.

Malcolm’s advocacy work centered on road safety and child protection. In November 2014, the City of Los Angeles and the Jamaica Awareness Association of California honoured him for his contributions to that organization. He later received the Bickle Award from Team Jamaica Bickle in recognition of his journalism and service to the Jamaican diaspora.

Beyond broadcasting, Malcolm worked as a master of ceremonies, motivational speaker, and theatre practitioner, with experience as an actor, stage manager, and voice-over artist.
