107 years ago today, Gabriele D’Annunzio marched into the city of Fiume with a ragtag band of elite soldiers. Over the course of the next 16 months, the city became home to syndicalists and futurists, anarchists and fascists, artists, poets, vagabonds and warriors.
Out of a broken city, he made a symbol of freedom and revenge. The men and women of Fiume were forged into tools of courage and dedication. Their battlecry echoes forth into eternity.
