@FirstTake Why was Hannibal Hamlin the right choice for VP in 1864 and why did Lincoln go in a different direction? Not enough people are talking about this.
call me crazy but joey chestnut is severely overpriced as a favorite in the hot dog eating contest odds this year as a 91% (!) favorite.
here's why I'm betting $50 (for a $781 payout) on patrick bertoletti to win Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest this year.
to start:
1. i'm assuming chestnut's decline in recent 4th of july contest will continue.
chestnut's performance at recent 4th of july contests have trended downwards in recent years - down from his all time high of 76 in 2021 (world record). but since then he's trended downward to 63 hot dogs in 2022 and 62 hot dogs in 2023. (he was banned in 2024 for the impossible foods sponsorship).
his all time high of 76 is near impossible to replicate because it was a covid year and as a result the competition took place in an indoor stadium which was an advantage for the contestants as there's less distractions and they're away from the heat that's common on july 4th.
to be fair, Chestnut consumed an impressive 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes in september 2, 2024 but again it was an optimal event produced on netflix and won't replicate the often chaotic and hot environment of the july 4th nathan's hot dog eating contest.
so my first assumption is that in this environment of competition, chestnut could realistically drop 1 or 2 dogs from his most recent performance -- putting him at an expected hot dog performance (xHD) of 60.
2. i'm assuming Bertoletti will perform better than his previous record of 58 hot dogs eaten.
Bertoletti is the defending champ from the 2024 hot dog eating contest with 58 HDs. in 2024 he started serious prep in November, ramping up hot dog practices 2–3× weekly to build speed and capacity.
importantly, to achieve his 2024 results, he drastically changed his usual training regime. he started regular practice using actual Nathan’s buns and dogs when previously he just used generic buns and dogs, he started training with Chestnut (!) and competed in other contests to build up endurance and flexibility.
in 2025, he's optimized his practice program even more. this time he began training earlier in April, and even adjusted frequency after realizing diminishing returns after 3–4 sessions. he’s dialing in timing and mental stamina—ensuring each session pushes capacity without causing fatigue—while leaning into top-tier insight via training with Chestnut.
realistically, with a closer competitor in Chestnut and with Bertoletti's mentality of having someone who can push him at this contest, we can reasonably expect an increase of 1-2 xHD from his previous record.
conclusion: this puts our xHD of Chestnut and Bertoletti at a fairly equal 60xHD.
with these considerations, the market should be pricing Chestnut v Bertoletti at a much closer 50/50 if not a 60/40 for Chestnut since Chestnut has the track record. what i do know is that Bertoletti is a severely underrated underdog here at a 6%.
BREAKING: Connecticut’s Dan Hurley has turned down the Los Angeles Lakers’ six-year, $70 million offer and will return to chase a third straight national title, sources tell ESPN. LA would’ve made him one of NBA’s six highest paid coaches.
1/2 I asked Cherington if there is a pitch count goal they are looking for from Paul Skenes before he's on MLB radar: “No, and if we did we probably wouldn’t share it publicly. It will need to be higher than 45 or wherever he was a couple of weeks ago. He’s starting to build now.
the thing about taylor swift is that she so perfectly encapsulates through her lyrics, the interior lives of women. It's why we all can't stop listening. We're all saying, "wait you felt that way? we were all feeling this way?"
do men have someone like that?
