📢📢 I'm delighted (and relieved!) to share the news that I've been awarded a three year @LeverhulmeTrust fellowship at @sotonpolitics starting in Feb!
The project is a huge opportunity to combine my interest in the left and governance just as @UKLabour enter power! 1/2

Dr Bradley Ward says that the current system of funding for political parties and a lack of capacity to deliver in government makes UK politics vulnerable to cronyism.
In a @LSEpoliticsblog he says only deep structural reforms can prevent future scandals.

Elon Musk’s alleged donation to Reform & Tulip Siddiq’s resignation raise further questions about party financing and centralisation in UK politics. Clientelism and cronyism will continue to thrive until significant reforms are made.
💥New! Accusations of cronyism and clientelism don’t seem to be going away for Labour. Tulip Siddiq’s recent resignation is just the latest incident. @JWard232 and @Broid_ argue that deep structural reforms is what's needed.

Rent prices increase substantially when Airbnb enters an area. In neighborhoods with high Airbnb activity, "rents are estimated to have increased by 7%, while increases in transaction prices are estimated at 17%"
Evidence from Barcelona
🧵on our work on b’ham city council quoted in the FT today. Key takeaways:
🔺the bankruptcy was triggered on the wrong basis
🔺This had disastrous effects as unnecessary cuts & asset sales were rushed through
🔺Another recovery plan is still possible

In the second part of the article, we draw on empirical examples to demonstrate how this framing can help to explain key dynamics in UK governance today. Overall, my view is that Labour will need to be more creative if they are to overcome these tensions.
🚨 @JWard232, myself and Pete Kerr published on centralisation and fragmentation in UK politics a few weeks ago in @PolStudiesRev. It's now open access & will be of interest to students and scholars of British governance🧵

We then highlight a consensus between the two schools around the idea that UK governance today is characterised by a centripetal–centrifugal dynamic between a power-hoarding centre and a range of forces eroding its capacity to deliver - we call this 'power without capacity'.
