Died July 3, 2020 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel

22, of San Antonio, died July 3 in a vehicle rollover accident in Farah, Afghanistan. Ibarria was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. Ibarria’s awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon.

Army Sgt. Jeremy Cain Sherman
Died November 12, 2020 Serving During Task Force Sinai

23, of Watseka, Illinois, died Nov. 12, 2020, in a helicopter crash while on a peacekeeping mission on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Sherman was a UH-60 crew chief assigned to Task Force Sinai’s aviation company. Capt. Seth Vernon Vandekamp, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Dallas Gearld Garza, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Marwan Sameh Ghabour, and Staff Sgt. Kyle Robert McKee also died in the crash, Sherman enlisted in 2015 and arrived in Egypt this October. His previous overseas assignments include tours in Korea and Afghanistan.

Army 1st Lt. Trevarius Ravon Bowman
Died May 19, 2020 Serving During Operation Freedom’s Sentinel

25, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, died May 19, 2020, from a non-combat-related incident at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.
 Bowman was assigned to Company B, 198th Signal Battalion, 261st Signal Brigade, based out of Newberry, South Carolina. Bowman’s awards and decorations included the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal

US Army CW2 Kevin Sullivan

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kevin P. Sullivan, aged 34 from Chesaning, Michigan, tragically passed away on July 22, 2019, at Fort Pickett, Virginia. He was conducting a training exercise when an unexpected severe weather event led to a tree falling on him.

Kevin was a member of the 13th Quartermaster Detachment, part of the 645th Regional Support Group and the 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) based in Livonia, Michigan. The incident also injured two other soldiers from the 952nd Quartermaster Company in Livonia, who were later treated and released from the hospital.

Sullivan enlisted in the Army in June 2003 and served on deployment in Iraq from 2007 to 2008. His service was recognized with several awards including the Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Army Service Ribbon, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.

He is remembered by his family, including his mother, father, sister, his fiancé, and his two young daughters.

Staff Sergeant Albert “Al” Miller,

aged 24, died tragically on April 19, 2019, at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, during Operation Freedom Sentinel. Al was adventurous, having explored six countries with his brother Dennis, and had just started a new life with his wife, Ashley.

A man of many talents, Al was well-read, engaging in dance, juggling, and philosophical debates, yet always ready to help when needed. His commitment to education was profound, with qualifications in EMT, Wilderness First Response, and aerospace technology, while also pursuing nursing.

From youth, Al dedicated himself to service, volunteering and serving in the military. He was deeply loved, leaving behind his wife Ashley, parents Mark and Mary, siblings, and many nieces and nephews. His memory endures in the hearts of those who knew him.

Army Spc. Branden Tyme Kimball

Died February 12, 2020 Serving During Operation Freedom's Sentinel

21, of Central Point, Oregon, died in a non-combat related incident Feb. 12, 2020, at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. The incident is under investigation. Kimball was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, out of Fort Drum, New York. His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Army Service Ribbon.

The Pentagon has identified a soldier who died at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, on Wednesday.
Spc. Branden Tyme Kimball died in a non-combat related incident, the Defense Department said in a press release, adding that the incident is under investigation.
Kimball was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade, out of Fort Drum, New York.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of SPC Branden Kimball during this very difficult time," division spokesman Lt. Col. Kamil Sztalkoper said in a statement.
"The loss of any Mountain Soldier has a lasting impact on every member of the team. The 10th Mountain Division mourns the loss of SPC Kimball, he will be missed from our formations."
The 21-year-old Kimball was a native of Central Point, Oregon. He served as an aircraft structural repairer while in the service.
Kimball joined the Army in August 2016 and following basic combat training and advanced individual training, he was assigned to 10th Mountain Division.
His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, and the Army Service Ribbon.
The deceased soldier is survived by his mother.

James G. Sartor

Died July 13, 2019 Serving During Operation Freedom's Sentinel
40, of Teague, Texas, died July 13, 2019, in Faryab Province, Afghanistan, as a result of injuries sustained from enemy small arms fire during combat operations. Sartor was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Carson, Colorado.

Sgt. Maj. James G. "Ryan" Sartor, 40, a Special Forces company sergeant major, died Saturday during combat operations in Faryab province, Afghanistan, the Army announced
Sunday.
Sartor was assigned to 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne). He died from injuries from enemy small arms fire, according to a Defense Department release.
He joined the Army in June 2001 and was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division as an infantryman. After he completed the Special Forces Qualification Course, Sartor was assigned to 10th SFG (A) in 2005.
Sartor had deployed numerous times, according to a release from U.S. Army Special Operations Command. He first deployed to Iraq as an infantryman in 2002. As a Green Beret, he was deployed in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010 with 2nd Battalion, 10th Group. He also deployed with the 10th to Afghanistan in 2017 and 2019.
"We're incredibly saddened to learn of Sgt. Maj. James 'Ryan' Sartor's passing in Afghanistan. Ryan was a beloved warrior who epitomized the quiet professional," said Col.
Brian R. Rauen, commander of 10th Group. "He led his soldiers from the front and his presence will be terribly missed."
Sartor's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Valorous Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Unit Citation with one oak leaf cluster and National Defense Service Medal, among others.
He has been posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal and Bronze Star medal.
Sartor also earned the Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Combat Infantryman Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge and Special Operations Diver Badge.
He is the 12th service member to have died this year in Afghanistan. Nine others have died in combat and two in non-combat related incidents.
