Read the sequence in order. Two Democratic commissioners fired by email from the White House personnel office. One Republican commissioner resigned rather than be next. A fourth seat already empty since April. The result, a bipartisan commission Congress built specifically to require two commissioners from each party now has zero commissioners from either.

The Election Assistance Commission doesn't run elections. It certifies the voting machines your county uses and maintains the national mail registration form. It's boring, technical, structurally bipartisan by law, which is exactly why gutting it matters more than a louder headline would suggest. You don't need to control an election to compromise trust in one. You just need to control who certifies the equipment.

The White House cited a recent Supreme Court decision expanding presidential power to fire independent agency officials as its legal cover. That's the part worth sitting with. This isn't an improvised move. It's a green light the administration was waiting for, used within days of getting it, on the one agency built to keep election infrastructure out of any single party's hands.
