An example of how the LDS (Mormon) church Gospel Topic Essays are disingenuous.

The race and the priesthood essay uses this Brigham Young quote:

“At the same time, President Young said that at some future day, black Church members would 'have [all] the privilege and more' enjoyed by other members.��

But if you follow the footnotes you'll see the context of the quote, which changes it entirely:

"Now I tell you what I know; when the mark was put upon Cain, Abels children was in all probability young; the Lord told Cain that he should not receive the blessings of the priesthood nor his seed, until the last of the posterity of Able had received the priesthood, until the redemption of the earth. If there never was a prophet, or apostle of Jesus Christ spoke it before, I tell you, this people that are commonly called Negroes are the children of old Cain. I know they are, I know that they cannot bear rule in the priesthood, for the curse on them was to remain upon them, until the residue of the posterity of Michal and his wife receive the blessings, the seed of Cain would have received had they not been cursed; and hold the keys of the priesthood, until the times of the restitution shall come, and the curse be wiped off from the earth, and from Michael's seed. Then Cain’s seed will be had in remembrance, and the time come when that curse should be wiped off." (Speech by Governor Brigham Young in Joint Session of the Legislature, Feb 5, 1852)

I don't see any other way to look at this except to see how this essay is being deceptive using a carefully selected phrase from Brigham's speech to reconcile it with a future lifting of the ban.

Slavers used Christianity to try to “tame” the enslaved. To make them believe slavery was God’s will, rape and brutality were what the enslaved deserved.

European settlers called Indians "savage” because they didn't live the way Europeans did.

The indigenous culture was crushed. They were slaughtered and forced to relocate.

The United States committed atrocities against Africans, African Americans, and Native Americans in the name of Christianity.

There were lynching picnics. Souvenirs taken from mutilated Black bodies.

This is American history. Hiding it gives racists cover to recommit atrocities of the past. #FreshWords

Today in 1946 WWII veteran Maceo Snipes was shot in his back by the KKK the day after he became the first Black person to cast a vote in Taylor County, Georgia.

After he was shot, Mr. Snipes walked three miles to the hospital with his mother. For six hours doctors left him waiting and bleeding. By the time he was seen, he needed a blood transfusion. The doctors said the hospital had no “black blood.” Snipes died two days later.

This is Charles & Willa Bruce. In 1912 they bought prime beachfront land in Manhattan Beach, LA County and built a Black resort community. In 1924 the county took it and refused to pay its value. In 2021, worth $72 million, it was returned to their descendents by Senate Bill 796.

In 1912, Black Californians Charles and Willa Bruce bought a small slice of Manhattan Beach real estate for around $1,200. They built a resort for fellow Black families in the area who found themselves unwelcome at Whites-only beaches, even renting out bathing suits and selling snacks — and they were almost immediately subjected to racist attacks. Everyone from neighbors, the police, the city council, and even the Ku Klux Klan tried to close the beach down. The city imposed 10-minute parking limits near the beach to try and discourage visitors, and finally in 1924, the Manhattan Beach city council just seized the property entirely, offering the Bruces a fraction of their asking price. Today, the stretch of beach is worth around $20 million — and Los Angeles County voted to finally return it to the Bruces' descendants in 2021.
