41-year Nebraska announcer Kent Pavelka’s (@KentPavelka) call of the end of #4 Nebraska’s win over #5 Vanderbilt and advancement to their first Sweet 16
Nebraska basketball is Indiana football.
Old group.
Coached at elite level.
Have a clear identity.
Wildly efficient on both ends.
Don’t EVER beat themselves.
Regardless of outcome tonight.
This is a true national title contender.
I really hope the WNBA turns things around, but honestly, it is a case study in how deep systemic misogyny plays out in real time. I am not saying every man does not care about the WNBA, but the league has been put on the back burner for years and clowned with no real promotion or consistent investment.
It shows what society truly values because there is no reason a league this talented has not turned a profit in 28 years. Men’s sports have been nurtured for decades. Even losing franchises STILL get full arenas, major media deals, and support, while women’s teams are still fighting for scraps.
Boys are taught to value and play sports, while girls were historically told to support men’s teams instead of their own. Less than 10 percent of total sports coverage goes to women’s sports, and the way some men speak on the WNBA today is v disrespectful. Too many only pay attention to who they find attractive, and some just recently started watching to create a race war.
I hope this new class of athletes like A’ja Wilson, Angel Reese, and CC helps shift the culture. The NBA deserves credit for continuing to support the WNBA and treating it as a long-term investment. They can afford to, and they should.
Ladies, we also have to show up more. Watch the games, buy the merch, follow the teams, and post the highlights. Be loud about your support. A’ja Wilson deserves to be talked about the same way LeBron James is in the NBA.
