Everybody at that gas station warned me about the dog behind the dumpster.

They said he was really mean and not to get close.

It took me three full days of leaving food before he finally let me sit beside him.

Under all that matted fur, I could barely find his eyes.

The vet shaved off almost 5 pounds (over 2kg) of knots and tangled fur that he had been dragging around for years.

A few months later, I had a completely different dog.

Now he sleeps on my bed, and some nights I look over and he’s already watching me from across the room, like he still can’t believe I came back.

If you have an old rescue dog sleeping near you right now, give him an extra scratch tonight. 🐕❤️

For 6+ years the Liberals have had a minority government. Yet not one ethics bill has passed to keep them accountable. Instead ethics laws have been reduced to a meaningless string of words that no one even takes seriously.

The list goes on and on folks.

Canada is a failed democracy. We are becoming rapidly more like Hong Kong, right when the CCP took over. Hence all the censorship bills and accountability destroying measures.

The shelter volunteer told me something I’ll never forget: “He’s not trying to play — he’s trying to make a deal.” He believed that if he gave away the only thing he owned, someone might take him home.

That day, I went to the shelter with a clear plan. I wanted a puppy. I wanted something simple — a fresh start, no past, no emotional baggage. I walked past the older dogs, ignoring the barking and the paws reaching through the cages.

Then I saw him.

He was in Kennel 58 — a big, heavy-headed dog with a rough appearance. The kind of dog most people pass without a second look.

When I stopped in front of his kennel, he didn’t bark or jump. Instead, he ran to the back, picked something up, and hurried back toward me.

It was a stuffed teddy bear — dirty, torn, and barely holding together. He gently pushed it against the fence, his tail wagging, his eyes full of quiet hope.

I asked the volunteer if he wanted to play.

She slowly shook her head. “No,” she said softly. “He’s offering what he has.”

She explained that his previous family had given him up, and that worn-out teddy bear was the only thing he arrived with. Since then, whenever someone stopped by, he offered it — believing that giving away his favorite possession might earn him love and a new home.

As we spoke, a family approached his kennel. The dog immediately perked up, pressing the bear harder against the bars, letting out a soft whine as if begging to be chosen. But the family quickly walked away, saying he looked too intimidating.

I watched the light fade from his eyes. He quietly dropped the bear onto the cold floor, rested his head on it, and lay down in silence.

He had offered everything he had — and it still wasn’t enough.

In that moment, something changed inside me. I didn’t want perfection or a clean slate. I wanted a heart that knew what it meant to be overlooked and finally chosen.

I knelt down and spoke gently to him. “I’ll take your offer,” I said.

I told the volunteer I didn’t need to see the puppies. I wanted him — and his teddy bear too.

When the kennel door opened, he didn’t rush out. He carefully picked up his bear, looked at me, and waited. I clipped on his leash and told him it was time to go home.

That was two years ago.

Today, Walter — once known as Kennel 58 — is an eighty-pound bundle of love who sleeps on my bed and has more new toys than he could ever need.

But every night, he still curls up with that same old, worn teddy bear. The difference is, he no longer offers it to earn love — he keeps it close, knowing he never has to trade it again.

He gave me a broken teddy bear.
I gained the most loyal friend I’ve ever had.

I was going to take him back to the shelter on Monday. I hate admitting that, but I was done. His name is Sarge. He’s a 110-pound Pyrenees mix, and for three weeks, he has been an absolute nightmare.

He doesn’t chew shoes. He doesn’t bark. He escapes. Six-foot fence? He digs under. Locked gate? He figured out the latch. Every single day while I was at work, he’d break out. Animal control would pick him up miles away, tired, dirty, and limping.

I couldn't take the fines anymore. I couldn't take the worry. "He just doesn't want to be here," I told my sister. "He’s a runner."

Yesterday was Saturday. I was home. At 10:00 AM, he started pacing. Whining at the door. Clawing at the wood. I decided to let him out, but this time, I was going to follow him. I had to know where he was going.

He didn't run to the park. He didn't chase squirrels. He put his nose to the ground and walked with a terrifying single-mindedness. He walked a long way. He crossed a highway. He cut through a thorny thicket that tore at my jacket.

Finally, he stopped at cemetery. He squeezed through a broken bar in the fence. I climbed over.

I found him in the back corner, the section where nobody visits anymore. He was lying flat on his belly in front of a small, neglected headstone. He wasn't panting. He wasn't restless. He was totally, completely still.

I walked closer. The name was an old man’s name.

I realized then why the shelter had trouble placing him. Why he was "a runner." He wasn't running away from me. He was running back to him.

For years, Sarge has been making this trek. Rain, snow, heat—it didn't matter. He had a standing appointment.

I sat down in the dirt next to him. I put my hand on his matted fur. He let out a long, shaky sigh and leaned his heavy head against my leg.

I’m not taking him back to the shelter on Monday. Instead, I bought a heavy-duty harness and a 20-foot lead. If he needs to visit his dad, he’s not going to do it alone anymore. We’ll walk the distance together. Every Saturday.

He’s not an escape artist. He’s just loyal to a fault.
