In 2018, after the Trump-Putin summit in Helsinki, I learned Russia wanted to interrogate me (and others) in exchange for US investigators questioning 12 Russian intelligence officers over electoral interference in 2016.
The White House took nearly a day to reject the proposal.
Congratulations to our members John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis, winners of the 2025 @NobelPrize in Physics for their groundbreaking experiments revealing quantum tunneling in electrical circuits.
A fitting recognition during the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, their work helped bring quantum mechanics from the microscopic to the macroscopic world.
We’re proud to have published their winning research in Physical Review Letters — and all three papers are now free to read. In addition, all three laureates have been APS members for more than 20 years and Clarke and Martinis are APS Fellows.
Supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. National Science Foundation, IBM, and the Commissiariat à l'Energie Atomique in France, this achievement is a reminder that international collaboration and sustained investment are essential to scientific and technological innovation.

RIP Jonathan Rosner, superb scientist, wonderful teacher, treasured colleague. Here he is with Hank Thacker on the summit of Mount Fuji in 1978, at sunrise, with a shrine we made to the b-quark.
This is an amazing thread into the Browder family history. Starting with my uncle Bill and ending with my son Josh, with all sorts of interesting relatives in between.
"They're celebrating in the Kremlin right now, they're popping Champagne."
Putin critic and financier, Bill Browder, says Trump's announcement about the war in Ukraine is his 'worst nightmare' come true.

Over 250 Belle II researchers gathered at @KEK this week for the 49th Belle II General Meeting. At this #B2GM we are on the threshold of the resumption of #Belle2 Run 2 after the 2024 summer shutdown. (1/2)
The 1972 USA presidential election was crucial for string theory.
George McGovern lost the election by a landslide. A young man who had worked on his campaign came to the realization that politics was not the right career path for him.
Edward Witten decided to pursue a career in physics instead.
Raynette van Tonder (McGill) has received a DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) Walter-Benjamin Fellowship for 221430€ to perform the first study of the charged lepton forward-backward asymmetry of inclusive semileptonic B decays using Belle II data. (1/2)
The 10th annual Belle II Summer Workshop was held from 16-21 June 2024 at the scenic and historic University of Mississippi campus in Oxford, MS, USA. Our summer workshops aim to educate Belle II early career researchers in data analysis, AI/ML and GRID computing techniques.
The specific Knighthood King Charles just bestowed upon me is “Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St George”(KCMG). It’s the most unexpected thing that could have ever happened. I grew up in a modest professor’s family on the south side of Chicago and moved to the UK 35 years ago. I’ve always felt a bit of an outsider here because of my accent and my background so to be knighted by the King is the warmest embrace imaginable by this country.
The Flavor Physics and CP violation conference #FPCP2024 was held 27-31 May in Bangkok, Thailand at Chulalongkorn University.
Hot and spicy flavor topics for 2024 included new results, talks, and papers from #Belle2, @LHCbExperiment, BESIII, and other international experiments.
We are also preparing results for the #ICHEP2024 conference in Prague, Czechia (https://t.co/Rye6e0z27V), and we have just submitted our 45th Journal publication: https://t.co/7uEhKKJLLY🧵2/2
