my take would be to fix and increase the level of infrastructure 300×, the stadiums which NPFL matches are played, the stadium quality, sitting conditions, the roads leading to the stadiums. are the roads good? are they international standard qualities?
While watching the Sporting Lagos vs Barau FC NPFL match yesterday, I couldn't help but look at what was happening around TBS with over 60,000 people lining up for the Black Market movie. I was actually part of the crowd that went to Onikan to watch the match and still went to the movie at TBS later in the day. Sixty thousand is truly a crazy number and it completely destroys the lazy narrative that Lagosians don't support events.
Recently, We’ve seen an increase in local football attendance lately, which is great. But seeing 60k people turn up for a movie makes you realize that the gap isn't the setup as clubs already do great matchday packaging.
I think it boils down to one thing: FOMO.
Right now, an NPFL matchday is a great event, but a movie premiere or a major concert is an "unmissable culture moment." People go because they are terrified of being left out of the conversation. To hit that milestone, we have to transition the NPFL from a sporting event into a pop-culture phenomenon. It needs to become the place where you have to be seen on a weekend.
When going to watch local football becomes the ultimate status symbol for Lagos youth; where the content creators, the fashion crowd, and the music heads all gather; the stadium gates won't even be able to hold the crowd.
As a fan who truly loves this league, I’m open to ideas on how we build that level of cultural FOMO around our matches to move the NPFL forward. Or honestly, is trying to compete with the entertainment industry just a lost cause?
I think we men hate to admit that having a woman that constantly bills us actually makes us hustle harder and stay locked in.
Imagine a single man that only works for himself. No pressure to do more. No one depending on him. No real pressure pushing him to wake up every morning and chase the bag harder.
We men know this secret, we just choose to keep it to ourselves.
Same reason I believe early marriage can help young men.
Waiting till 35 before getting married won’t automatically make you richer. Dangote, Otedola and many other successful men took on serious responsibilities very early and still built empires.
