A Kenyan man, Daniel Olomae Ole Sapit, accidentally flew to Pyongyang, North Korea, instead of Pyeongchang, South Korea, in October 2014.

The viral travel mix-up occurred when his travel agent confused the two similarly named cities while booking his flight itinerary to a United Nations biodiversity conference.

Upon landing at Sunan International Airport, Sapit noticed heavy military presence and armed guards. He quickly realized he lacked the required entry visa.

North Korean border officials detained and interrogated him for over five hours. They were deeply suspicious of an unauthorized Kenyan national arriving in their capital.

North Korean border authorities deeply suspected Daniel Olomae Ole Sapit was an intelligence threat or a spy due to the highly unusual and unauthorized arrival of a Kenyan citizen in their capital. Given the country's extreme isolation and tense geopolitical environment, immigration officials treated his lack of a visa and his explanation of a "spelling error" with immense skepticism.

After Sapit successfully convinced authorities that it was an honest geographical spelling mistake, they penalized him. He was forced to pay a $500 (approx. 65,000 shillings) fine for illegal entry.

North Korean officials placed him on a flight back to Beijing, China. From Beijing, he rebooked his flights and successfully traveled to South Korea.

Sapit remains the only known Kenyan to have set foot in North Korea.
