――井上対中谷戦の流れは想定内だったのでしょうか？
井上真吾：想定内でした。スタートの時、尚弥のジャブ、パンチは届いているんですけど、中谷選手のパンチが届いてない。尚弥の圧力があるから、入りたいんだろうけど入れてないよねっていうのがわかりました。そうなったら尚弥の距離。ポイントはこっちのものという思いがありました。むしろ西田戦のようにインファイト、ラフファイトで来て、体力勝負になった時の方に不安はあったんです。
――中谷選手の出方次第で戦い方が変わっていた？
井上真吾：引き出しは用意してありました。事前の会見で尚弥が言ってた通り、中谷選手には（西田戦で見せた）ああいうボクシングもあるというイメージを頭にしっかり残していたので怖さはなかったです。そうなったとしても、覚悟はありました。準備さえできていれば、対応はできるんです。

2022年6月、初めてPFP1位になった直後の井上尚弥選手の言葉を思い出します。「（2位のウシクと）1票差だったんですよね？真のNo.1だとは今でも全然、思っていないです。その差をどんどん広げられるようなパフォーマンスができたら、本当に胸を張って自分がNo.1と言えるんじゃないかと思います」。時は流れ、今回は1人を除き、意見を言った選定委員は揃って井上選手の1位浮上をサポート（その1人も話の流れ的に勘違いで2位としたのでは。現在確認中）。文句なしの世界No.1ボクサーになりました。
