Despite oppositions by littorals Japan started the release of treated nuclear wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. It was reported that this process could last about 30 years.
This decision no doubt violates the essence of the UNCLOS and UN Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) as well as the UN High Seas Treaty. Furthermote the rights of indigenous Pacific communities which they are dependent on fishing are affected.
G7 says nothing. After all, this is “rules based order.” They can do anything they deem necessary. Anyway, beware the fish coming from Japan.
