In Nyeri today, we confirmed the body of a shujaa who was brought to the hospital on 25th June. He stayed in ICU for a month then succumbed on 24th July. It is suspected he was shot. Before he went unconscious, he gave his name as John Thuku.

The government has directed that all unknown bodies be disposed of. It means families of missing persons, like John Thuku's, may never get to know the fate of their loved ones once the unknown bodies are buried in mass graves.

Confirmation of this death takes the death toll during protests to 61. We are urging families of missing persons to visit the morgue at Nyeri County General Hospital to see if the body is theirs. RIP Shujaa John Thuku.
