@HicksCBER@MVHarper This is also why I don’t think studies claiming federal employees are overpaid hold water. The federal workforce of today is much more educated and specialized than the general labor market, and even more so compared to the federal workforce of 30 years ago.
@HicksCBER@MVHarper I’d be interested in seeing charts which include some sort of “direct” service contracts, but have no clue how you’d define it. The federal government has over the last few decades moved a lot of these jobs (security guards, blue collar jobs, etc) to contracted positions.
@proudnotcocky I think a really good balance would at minimum be a county level. Indiana, which is the only place I have awareness of, has approximately 500 policing agencies but only 92 counties.
I’ve pondered going to med school since my early days in undergrad but can never bring myself to apply for this reason. The system seems toxic and soul sucking to work in.
Medical students are walking into a field in which they hope to take care of others. A beautiful people I think.
I do wonder how many of them really understand how focused the major players of the industry are on profit only.
@olsonplanner I think it depends on how we define emergency. CCs can pay for food, clothes, etc but not often mortgage/loan/rent payments W/O cash advances. I often see people using CCs to pay off medical debts, which is a horrendously bad idea in every case I’ve come across.
“More than three-quarters of medical students came from families in the top two quintiles of family income.” -2018 AAMC report. We need more economic diversity among med students.
@honest_math@olsonplanner I wish more people understood the algebra behind why “you pay more interest at the beginning of a loan than at the end.” Understanding this simple equation (or at least looking at the amortization tables) would enable better financial decisions.
@olsonplanner @drtedritchie For the record, I see home ownership as a useful tool to hedge against housing inflation (not immune on the upkeep side) and in some retirement/disability instances. But I haven’t been on the “single family homes make good investments” bandwagon for years.
@olsonplanner @drtedritchie See: Yale Economist Robert Shiller. Outside select markets, single family housing is often a poor investment when you remove anecdote and look at the data.
@Gabby_Brauner27@SSpadaforeMD@DrHarryDOesHep The way healthcare systems spread overhead costs amongst procedures in this country is mind boggling and almost always haphazard. This should really be reformed.
@BestFlagellum72@AlanaKinrich As an accountant myself who has pondered going to Med School for a couple years now, I can attest that nobody seems this thankful following a *checks notes* discussion of their tax bill.
