Maybe we need to seriously rethink the boarding school culture altogether.
The incident at Utumishi Girls Academy is heartbreaking, but sadly it also feels familiar. Every few years we mourn another tragedy, hold press conferences, promise reforms, then move on until the next incident.
We normalized a system where children spend most of their formative years away from family, under pressure, overcrowded, emotionally exhausted, and sometimes poorly supervised.
Education should not come at the cost of safety, dignity, mental health, or basic humanity.
My sincere condolences go to the parents who’ve lost their children.
I wish which the rest who are receiving treatment quick recovery.
