Artist spotlight, @mariafynsknorup
On a small, god forgotten island in Denmark, where the harsh wind and the coarse salt from the sea meets with the beauty of the Scandinavian nature, lives Maria.
Maria with her elegant, enigmatic photography and mesmerising focus on the unknown.
Her artworks reveal a gentle, sensitive soul, and hint at an upbringing in a country with rich folklore history, full of pagan-weaved mysticism and home of spirits and entities that were here long before us.
There's a mysterious darkness looming in Maria's photos that makes you feel intrigued, even.. curious?
..and the veil of reality gets thinner by every click of her shutter.
It's beautifully alluring.
Everyone could relate to Maria's artworks, yet no one could ever truly understand.
She overlays the reality with a mystical haze and perfectly captures the essence of why people used to fear and respect the Nature.
She shows us things that we can no longer see.
That there are things that are bigger and wilder than us.
She teaches us to surrender and accept the unknown.
3 questions, 3 answers
Q: From your art it seems like you and the darkness are in an eternal dance, kinda like you are constantly exploring each other. What does the darkness mean to you in your living life?
A: I think darkness is part of existence, if you don't know the darkness then you can't know the light.
For me it's the counter balance to happiness.
I think also because of my experiences, it's been something I've been forced to deal with in a way that made sense to me.
Q: Can you think of one ritual from the old times that we stopped doing and you think we should get back to? Why?
A: I think one thing we are missing out on is the All Hallows' Eve, which we kind of replaced by Halloween. It's when we used to light candles for those we had lost.
To honour the dead, and to make that part of life feel more normal.
Now it feels just like a carnival, and it separates us more from the end of life.
Q: In your art, are you letting things in, or are you releasing them? Is it an inhale, or an exhale?
A: 100% exhale (I think).
That's the easiest answer. I have often created from very painful places, which is clearly an exhale.
I think that with time it will probably become also an inhale.
Now I am definitely trying to make art that nourishes me in a different way, and I wish to be more mindful when I create.
