The one DSA candidate to lose in New York City last week was Conrad Blackburn in #AD70. Blackburn lost to incumbent Jordan Wright (the son of the Manhattan Dems President) by 8 in this Harlem district.

Blackburn was heavily attacked for interning for Pam Bondi in his early life.

Yesterday, Colorado chose two immigrant stories to carry its banner forward: Phil Weiser and Melat Kiros.

Phil's mother was born in the Buchenwald concentration camp on April 13, 1945. One day after her birth, the camp was liberated by the U.S. Army. Within a single generation, her son would become Colorado's Attorney General, and now our nominee for Governor.

Melat was born in Ethiopia and came to Denver as a baby, her parents arriving with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They built a life here. They chased the American dream and caught it. Yesterday, they watched their daughter win her race for Congress.

Immigrants make America great, and Colorado knows they make great leaders too. Proud to have supported them both.

The congressional primary winner and the mayor’s top legal adviser have been quietly dating since 2023.

The couple first met in 2019, while Avila Chevalier was doing immigrant defense organizing with Families of Freedom. Kassem was also involved in that work through CLEAR, a legal clinic he founded at the City University of New York. Avila Chevalier later enrolled at the CUNY Graduate Center as a doctoral student in sociology.
