The Austro-Hungarian Versuchsgleitboot undergoing testing during WW1.
The Versuchsgleitboot (Experimental gliding boat) was a torpedo boat that utilized ground effect to float just over the surface of the water when at speed. Due to the fact that it would skim over the surface, the Versuchsgleitboot would be faster than traditional hulls while also being immune to mines or other harbor defenses. The projected armament was to be two 450mm torpedoes as well as a brace of bombs to be used against enemy submarines.
The prototype Versuchsgleitboot was built in 1915 and began testing at the start of 1916. The craft performed well, reaching speeds in excess of 32.5 knots during trials. Unfortunately, though the performance goals were met, the Versuchsgleitboot proved tricky to control and the powerplant (made up of four airplane engines) suffered reliability issues.
Due to these issues as well as well as wanting to streamline wartime production, the Austro-Hungarian Navy decided against putting the Versuchsgleitboot into production. An sad end to one of the most radical weapons of the day.

Yeah so I think the ad for our AI company should open with an ominous shot of a burning house. And then when we raise the question of stopping a dangerously powerful superintelligence we show 300 American gravestones for half a second
