The tyres you see on the car now are not the original tyres.

This is General Murtala Muhammed official car, a thin-skinned Mercedes Benz 230.6.

It is now about 50 years and few months old. He and two of his aides were assassinated in this car on the 13th day of February 1976, which is the same month I was born.

The car still looks very new because of maintenance at the National Museum Onikan, Lagos where it is kept in the Nigerian Government Yesterday and Today hall.

The original tyres were shredded by bullets during the ambush near the Federal Secretariat in Ikoyi.

Those original tyres are kept inside the boot of the car. Next time you go there, ask the curator to open the boot for you to see them.

The bullet holes are still on the windscreen, side windows and rear screen.

About the people inside the car that morning, history says there were four people in the car.

One was General Murtala Muhammed himself, Head of State, aged 37.

Two was Lieutenant Akintunde Akinsehinwa, his Aide de Camp.

Three was Staff Sergeant Adamu Michika, his driver. (He was the first to be killed making the car to stop)

Four was Staff Sergeant Michael Otuwu, his orderly. He was the only one who survived. They took all of them to the mortuary and later discovered he was still breathing.

He is Igala from Kogi State and he is still alive to tell the story.
