I’ve got a video on my phone from February 2025 that I keep going back to where she’s telling me a story about something, I forget what it was. But, you can tell she’s very into the story she’s telling, because she’s telling it with her whole body. With her face, with her hands, and with all the mannerisms of a very grown Aunty advising a young child.
And I remember being so amused, not even by the story itself, but by the way she’s telling the story, and thinking to myself that “ah chale this girl is so mpanyinsem” so I decide to record her. But about five seconds into the video, she catches me, and you can tell for a brief moment that she’s taken aback because she pauses, but then she smiles bashfully, and turns her head away.
It’s probably the most heart wrenching thing I could be doing to myself right now, but I can’t stop looking at that video because it was the last one I ever took of her
And, I guess that’s how I would like to remember her. As a funny, dramatic, mpanyinsem-ly young lady, who was so so brilliant and had such a bright future ahead of her that was snatched away for no reason at all.
I remember how in the early days of our friendship (circa 2019/20), I would often call her my most beautiful friend, and she would always demur with a “You people say that, but I don’t see it too”, and I would denounce her as a forken liar, amidst her most effusive protestations, after which we would both descend into titters like little school girls.
But as beautiful as she was - and she was a rare beauty indeed - her beauty may have been the least impressive thing about her. Araba had such a big heart, and an endless capacity for empathy. She never lost her playfulness and her sense of wonder either. And she was brilliant. I think that was my favourite thing about her. She was brilliant.
We had in common an intense dedication to our close friends, which I suspect came from not having any biological siblings of our own. But Araba had this unique ability to make you feel like you were the greatest thing since the discovery of fire, when she decided that you were her person.
Seeing how she would light up with excitement - nay - with dramatic excitement when she was around the people that she loved was such a beautiful thing to witness. To be so lucky that you experienced in your life, if even for just one minute, a fraction of what it felt like when Araba thought you were hot shit. To be so lucky...
And it's hilarious because every time I got on TV for one shenanigan or the other, you could expect Araba to come cackling in my snap, like a clockwork, with VNs of "Eiishh, hottest lawyer in Accraaa".

I can’t even begin to imagine what Hanslina must be going through right now, what her mum must be going through... Man....
I keep cycling through different thoughts, different memories. I have contemplated all the many different possibilities. All the “what ifs”. If the Black Stars don’t qualify,…if Caleb Yirenkyi doesn’t score that goal… if she goes to bed, like she says she was supposed to… if she gets left behind by her friends... if she doesn’t get a ride to the venue… Heck, if someone had known to administer CPR in those first few minutes, then maybe…y'know? Maybe.
But it's all just maybes. It doesn’t change a thing.
It doesn't change a damn thing.
She's gone.
The Sunday before she died, we were talking strategies on how to scale up her clientele in Kumasi. And the day before she died, I promised I would call her, and I just ... forgot. As I always do. And then she goes and dies.
How do you live that down?
I haven’t wanted to talk about this with anyone. If you texted me and I didn't respond, I'm sorry man, but so little has mattered since. The pain of this loss is too personal, to have it diminished or tainted by a well intentioned, yet inadequate response... or worse, a deplorable one
So instead, I have skulked around the pages of her nearest and dearest, Hanslina, Ghansah and AminTheOther, in hopes of finding some community in misery. Misery does love company after all.
On Ghansah’s page, I found the words “Araba is dead, and everything is worse now”, and my eyes welled up. Never have so few words captured such depth of feeling as I was feeling in that moment.
I love that line. It's from Bojack Horseman. It’s a line that is devastating precisely because of its austerity. It’s not poetic, there’s no attempt to elevate the moment in search of something profound. There's nothing there outside of the cold, lonely realization that she’s gone, and nothing will ever be the way it was.
Because she is gone. Faith the size of the Everest will not change that. She's really really gone.
