Source: https://t.co/aQw4wAHmdV [Mediatitude]

In recent weeks, the Camerounian political scene has been engulfed in heated and often divisive debates with strong ethnic undertones about the Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC). The controversy was sparked by political commentator Elimbi Lobe who claimed that Ernest Ouandié—the last historic leader of the UPC—was not a national hero but merely a common bandit.
According to Lobe, Ouandie's Bamileke comrades in the UPC also exploited the anti-colonial struggle as a pretext to seize land from the indigenous populations of the Mungo region.
Meredith Terretta’s book, “Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence,” published a decade ago, offers a well-researched and objective analysis of the UPC movement, the role of the Bamileke in the UPC insurgency against the French and the Ahidjo regime, and the party’s activities in the Mungo region . There is a common saying: "Les Camerounais lisent peu mais parlent beaucoup." It is foolhardy, as many have done recently, to rely solely on old newspaper clippings and archival notes from the French or the Ahidjo regime to assess the UPC and its leaders because these materials alone do not provide the necessary historical context. In this regard, Terretta’s book – and many others like it – serves as an invaluable resource for anyone genuinely interested in the UPC insurgency and the land issues in Mungo. #Cameroon #Cameroun
