The FIFA Men's World Cup begins Thursday.
And the United States is already an international embarrassment.

Here is what has happened in the last 72 hours at American airports and border checkpoints:

🔴 OMAR ARTAN — Somali referee. Named the CAF Best Male Referee of 2025. Chosen by FIFA as one of only 52 referees for the entire tournament. Would have been the first-ever Somali World Cup official. He arrived at Miami International Airport on a Somali diplomatic passport with full FIFA documentation.

He was detained for 11 hours. Asked about Somali politics. Asked about al-Shabab. Shown his FIFA credentials. Shown photographs of his refereeing career.

Denied entry. Sent back to Istanbul.

FIFA confirmed: Omar Abdulkadir Artan will not officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

🔴 AYMEN HUSSEIN — Iraqi soccer player. Detained at Chicago O'Hare International Airport for 7 hours before being allowed entry.

🔴 TALAL SALAH — Iraqi team photographer. Detained at O'Hare. Phone searched. Denied entry. Sent home. CBP cited "vetting concerns."

🔴 ZAKARIA EL OUAHDI — Moroccan player. Held up in the FIFA accreditation process.

🔴 DOZENS OF MOROCCAN FANS — who purchased tickets had their visas denied without explanation, per the president of a prominent Moroccan supporters organization.

🔴 SCOTTISH FANS — reporting ESTA application issues and denials.

🔴 AFRICAN AND IRANIAN JOURNALISTS — The International Sports Press Association sent a formal letter to FIFA on June 5 complaining that many have been denied entry to cover the event.

🔴 More than 120 civil organizations issued a joint travel advisory warning fans to "exercise caution" and have an emergency contingency plan when traveling to the United States for the World Cup.

Ian Wright — former Arsenal and England star, one of the most recognized faces in global football:

"Every few hours it's another story — another story about fans denied, players denied, officials denied, journalists denied, now refs. Is this how the hosts behave really for the greatest game, the greatest tournament in the world?"

He called it a "World Cup of chaos."
