After hearing the word “Shambala” from his brother and researching its spiritual meaning, Daniel Moore turned the mythical concept, rooted in Tibetan Buddhist tradition as a hidden kingdom of peace and enlightenment, into an uplifting song about joy, inner harmony and letting your light shine. Three Dog Night recorded the track in December 1972 for their album Cyan, and it was released as a single in 1973, climbing to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In a curious twist, B.W. Stevenson released his own version shortly before Three Dog Night’s and sold around 125,000 copies before the latter took over the charts. Three Dog Night’s recording ultimately sold more than 1.25 million copies and became the song’s best-known and definitive hit version.
