I understand that the social security conversation is political poison. But I’m not running for office so I don’t care about that. Taking huge chunks out of the paychecks of young working Americans in order to pay for the retirements of older Americans who have a net worth several times higher, all to prop up a system that everyone knows likely won’t be there when those younger people are retirement age themselves, is morally abhorrent and economically insane. Everyone knows it, too, but we’re held hostage by elderly politicians who refuse to surrender power, and older voters who, as a group (with exceptions, obviously), simply don’t care all that much about the financial and cultural future their grandchildren will inherit.

A lot of western leftists look at Brazil (and other places) and see it as some abstract fun ideological laboratory, relevant solely through the prism of the issues they prioritize from a distance (US imperialism, Israel, the viability socialism in Latin America, etc. etc.).
In reality, tens of millions of poor people, black people, working-class Brazilians, etc. voted for Bolsonaro again (just as their American counterparts voted for Trump). If you talk to random apolitical people, what they worry about is not what the David Adlers worry about when jetting into Brazil, but rather what plagues their daily lives: extreme levels of street violence, drug gangs, economic misery, lack of good education and health care for their kids, etc.
You can lecture them all they want that Lula is better for them but they've been hearing that forever. Lula and his party have been in the presidency in Brazil for 20 of the last 26 years. Younger people don't know and don't care about the inspiring mythology and iconography of Lula.
They just don't think the government cares about their lives and so blame those in power: same story throughout the democratic world. It's not ultimately all that complicated.
Can't get over this picture of the French firefighter on fire surrounded by a crowd of immigrant rioters. Note how they stand back filming, mouths agape, as he battles the flames they are responsible for. They couldn't care less. None of this matters to them. Why would it?
A firefighter makes a promise to always answer the call of duty.
Washington made him a promise too: for his service, his retirement would be protected from taxes.
This year, Olympia broke that promise. Vote yes on I-645 to restore it.
Rep Ryu is NOT alone @thehoffather - Senator Jamie Pedersen @People4Pedersen has shared privately with several people that his plan is to lower the income tax to $250,000 next. Vote Yes on I-645 to repeal the income tax!
Giving this a second listen
1) First off, it strikes me that this unconstitutional income tax has absolutely nothing to do in their mind with raising revenue, it is all about how much money these arrogant kleptocratic legislators think you should be allowed to keep to “be comfortable… “
2) Straight up their intention is to expand the tax - even before it collects a dime
3) $250K per household means $125K per person — its coming for you sooner than you even thought
4) Hmmm now it makes sense why they took the protections off everyones’ pension and retirment accounts
5) A corporate income tax is on her wish list… Do you hear that Brad Smith you are not safe sitting on the sidelines they want you for the second course
Your paycheck, business, and job is in their crosshairs.
Vote Yes I-645 to Repeal the Income Tax before it is too late.
NEW: Democratic Rep Cindy Ryu admits her party plans to lower the threshold on the income tax from millionaires to everyone in WA state & that she wants to tax companies more
She told KUOW, "Let's look at less, about 250,000. Can we live well on$250,000 a year of net income?"
