It always fills me with great pride to watch our student-athletes impact others from their platform and last night I got a special glimpse of that from @zekexmayo.
I had a pleasure of giving a postgame tour to our #KUCancerFighter family of the day, the Jowler Family of Inman, KS. Korbyn is one of 3 kids whose sweet Mom, Ashley, is battling cancer. Korbyn accompanied his parents on the tour and got to meet one his heroes, Zeke Mayo.
Knowing that Korbyn wants to follow in Zeke’s footsteps as a Kansas kid who one day plays for the Jayhawks, I asked Zeke to share some wisdom on what it might take fulfill such a dream. To be fair, I gave Zeke zero advance notice and truly put him on the spot with the question but he handled it like such a pro.
Zeke got down and looked Korbyn squarely in the eyes and said, “Always remember that where you start doesn’t have to be where you finish. You can come from a small town or far away place and still finish where you dream, so long as you’re willing to put in the work. I’m not just talking about work on the court, either. In order to be the best basketball player you can be, it starts with being the best son and big brother you can be. Always listen to your parents, strive to set a good example, work hard in school and try to get better each day with that same end goal in mind. Do all that and you can absolutely live that dream.”
Korbyn hung on each & every word. His parents and I were all speechless too. Tremendous advice from the young man who just hung 23 on the Sun Devils, and then provided some life-changing motivation & inspiration to one of the youngest fans in attendance (not to mention, a great diversion from the cancer battle for Korbyn’s mother).
Good for you, Zeke. Your 5 threes last night had us all on our feet, but your inspiring words after made many Mayo fans for life. Rock Chalk! #kubball
Lost Rail Golf Club - #93/Top 100
2022 - Scott Hoffman
WOW. 🤩
I had heard a lot of hype going in, but you never know how good a golf course is until you’ve walked it yourself. I can tell you, Lost Rail is a top tier golf club in all ways.
The land is incredible, you can tell it was a very challenging routing. Very hilly with constant ravines to work around, Hoffman was able to not only find a cohesive routing, but he somehow made it very walkable.
The conditions are absolutely perfect. The turf was extra lush due to recent rains, but still managed to play firm and fast. Aesthetically the entire golf course is gorgeous, the bunkering and fescue creating a classic look, while the fairways and greens add a modern flair.
I’d describe the play style as modern strategic. Wide fairways mean players won’t have to look for balls too often. But where you land matters, contours often can add 40 yards to your drive if you land in the right place. Safe lines can make a golf hole 50 yards longer. The greens are highly contoured adding lots of fun to the short game.
The club itself is perfect. 275 single golf memberships, it’s uncrowded. 4 hour rounds are the expectation, our foursome walked in well under. There are no houses on the course, just 20 minutes from Omaha you feel like you are out in nature. The service and food and amenities are all excellent and exactly what you want in a golf club.
This was Hoffman’s first solo design, but he spent decades as Fazio’s lead designer on the west coast. His experience designing and building places like Gozzer Ranch really shows, Lost Rail is a masterpiece.
A wonderful day with great friends. One of the best modern golf clubs in the country.
The Other Course - 2016
Jackson Kahn Design
Wow. Wow. Wow……WOW 🤯
Scottsdale National is known as one of the most expensive and exclusive clubs on the planet, I didn’t know what to expect at Bob Parson’s private enclave. It exceeded the highest expectations.
The second course at SN, aptly named The Other Course, is a truly remarkable feat. The architects moved over 1.5 million cubic feet of dirt and blew up tons of rock to create a visually stunning and unique golf course.
The course is all about FUN. Wide fairways with tons of land movement. Giant greens with contours that need to be played to be believed. The bunkers are absolutely gorgeous and punishing at the same time. The views are incredible as well.
The fun starts when the ball hits the ground…which is a common theme of many of the worlds best golf courses.
If lucky enough to be here, you may find yourself to be the only group on the course. With 45 holes to share between the small membership, it’s a fast golfer’s paradise.
Jackson Kahn were given carte blanche with a big piece of land and a big budget and they hit a home run! Bold and brash, The Other Course is a modern masterpiece. Really hope to see more original builds by this remarkable team.
What a truly incredible day at a truly incredible club with a gracious host. Amazing service, I was treated like a member all day. One of the least stuffy elite clubs you will find. Bob Parsons has built a piece of heaven in the desert.
