James W. Holley III was the first African American mayor of the City of Portsmouth. Although he was recalled, he was elected again in 2008. Holley is the city’s longest-serving mayor. He supported candidates of both parties during his tenure.
L. Douglas Wilder is a chemist, lawyer, and politician. His political experience stretches across the General Assembly, Governor’s Mansion, and Richmond’s Mayor's Office. Wilder is the first African American governor in United States History.

African-American Innovator: Booker T. Whatley encouraged farmers to create membership clubs, selling memberships in exchange for fresh produce to provide steady cash flow. The model changed the way farmers sell produce. #BHM

African-American Innovator: George Washington Carver was a soil scientist who pioneered crop rotation. He recognized that cotton depleted nitrogen in the soil, so he began alternating cotton crops with other nitrogen-fixing legumes 🥜.
