BTS didn't refuse in an ordinary year. They refused in the year the Recording Academy was supposed to present Disney with the Grammys' global future.
"The best is yet to come," Harvey Mason jr. said in May 2026 as the Academy unveiled the first Grammys broadcast of its new Disney era. The ten-year deal had been announced in October 2024 and was due to begin in 2027. In July 2026, BTS declined to submit their music for the first ceremony under that deal.
The Academy had sold Disney a decade-long global media product. BTS exposed its limits before the first broadcast.
🇺🇸Billboard
🇺🇸VULTURE
🇫🇷Paris Match
🇬🇧Tatler(아시아판)
A well-written piece 👏
— What Grammys lost when BTS walked away
"Big Hit Music asked that the statement be taken as written, and taken as written it is remarkable, because it asks for nothing. A boycott makes demands. This made none, set no conditions, named no grievance, and offered the Recording Academy no way to win them back. You negotiate with an institution whose judgment you still need. The one whose judgment you have outgrown, you simply inform."

[Kmedia] "The Award #BTS Rejected" — Grammys Become a 'Poisoned Chalice', Will a K-Pop Boycott Domino Effect Begin?"
“We set the standard in our own way.” The weighty message raised by the supergroup #BTS as they rebuked the ‘Best Asian Pop Performance’ category at the Grammy Awards is shaking the global popular music scene. As a consensus spreads across the cultural sphere, not just the K-pop scene, regarding #BTS’s principled move, attention is focused on whether this will lead to a massive domino effect of a ‘collective boycott’ by K-pop artists.
Domestic K-pop fans are pressuring other acts to take a stand against the Recording Academy's new, allegedly discriminatory Asian pop category and sharply turning against the U.S. awards show — "It's a racist award ceremony," one viral post on the Korean online forum Nate Pann said on Wednesday.
"Now that BTS has boycotted the racist Grammys, any K-pop artist who eagerly submits to the Grammys will probably just get mocked, and even if they get lucky and win something it'll feel completely gross."
"I genuinely hope there's no K-pop artist tone-deaf enough to eagerly participate now,"
"The Grammys created one category called Asian Pop, basically gave it to BTS, and made clear the general awards — the real ones — are off-limits to K-pop" reads another viral post on Thursday.
"Honestly, shouldn't every K-pop artist join in?" similar posts continued, referring to BTS's boycott.
If the initiative launched by BTS leads to a series of boycotts by K-pop artists, it seems clear that the Grammys, not K-pop, will be the one taking the hit. The Grammys must endure massive losses in terms of popularity, such as social media traffic and viewership ratings. It amounts to a "self-defeating move" where they attempted to use K-pop as a ratings card only to be abandoned by K-pop itself. Support from industry experts and influential global celebrities is also pouring in for BTS's recent decision that aligns with the "spirit of resistance against unreasonable power" of global top-class artists who changed the history of pop music.

"¿Y qué si no tenemos dinero? ¿Acaso no tenemos dignidad?"
