This is gogo Nkuna. This started as a sore gum. She has no teeth. In a few months it has grown into this. She has been to the clinic and was given painkillers and mouth wash. She told me the nurse said she will refer her to Ermelo for a scan.

Think about how extraordinary it is to be a baby elephant. You're surrounded by your immediate and extended family when you're born. This calf is sandwiched between his mom and grandma. His siblings, aunts, and cousins surround him. Elephants are like us in that they live similar lifespans in the wild, become sexually mature around the same age, and so much of their lives is based on learned behavior, not instinct. Over the next 15 years, generations of knowledge will be passed down to him about how to protect himself, where the best water and food sources are, and how he should determine whether he can trust another creature. If this calf were a female, she would live the rest of her life with her mom, grandma, aunts, and sisters. As babies join her herd, she will help babysit them (called nannying), which will help her learn how to be a mom one day. Led by a matriarch who will feel a deep sense of duty to guide her family, the herd will support each other, protect each other, and continue to pass on what they know to future generations.
