As I passed them in the produce section I heard a girl ask her mother: “why are they wearing a mask?” so her mother explained:
“they don’t want to get sick,”
and as I turned my cart
into the bakery section I heard the girl reply: “I don’t want to get sick either.”
During the last week of May
back in 2020
it was established
that 100,000 COVID deaths
(just in the US) amounted to
“an incalculable loss.”
And by that metric
during the last week of May
here in 2026
(just in the US) we are at
12 “incalculable losses”
and still growing.
I have read a statement
that “a whole civilization
will die tonight,
never to be brought back again,”
and as I read that statement
and as I reread that statement
I cannot shake the feeling
that the civilization
from which that statement comes
is one that is already dead.
I know, my cautious friend,
that when you find yourself
being snickered at
as the only masked person
in the room
you may feel slightly foolish,
but remember, my cautious friend,
that those who are acting
like this pandemic is over
are just fooling themselves.
More and more
research keeps emerging
that worryingly documents
“How COVID
Quietly
Rewires the Brain,”
but should you try
to warn others
about these findings
you will be told
to just be quiet.
When you hear them ask (and you will hear them ask) why astronauts
and Olympic athletes are still wearing masks in 2026, kindly but firmly reply that the real question is if astronauts
and Olympic athletes are still wearing masks in 2026 then why aren’t the rest of us.
There were years (many years) in which friends and family would accuse me of being too pessimistic,
yes, there were years (many years) in which friends and family would accuse me of being too pessimistic,
but those years are over,
and now I miss them,
oh, how I miss them.
It is not so much
that I am in
my mask era,
as that I understand
that all of us
are still in
the Covid era.

Become the deviant variable during the protest and break out of the worthless chants and calls for peace.
Sometimes all it takes is for one person to take real, direct action and others will follow.
I have heard it said
that at this point
to talk of the pandemic
to still take precautions
“is really not normal,”
which is a sad testament
to the ways in which
apathy
has become quite normal.
Many people try to put
the virus
out of sight and out of mind,
but a study found
“COVID can cause
alzheimer’s like plaques
in Eyes and Brain,”
which unfortunately means
many people can try to put
the virus
out of sight and
out of mind
but sight and mind
are where it stays.
Will we
get through this?
No, we
will not get through this.
Only some of us
will get through this.
And it is imperative
that you
understand this difference.
