In ‘The Lighthouse’, Robert Eggers was inspired by paintings such as ‘Hypnosis’ by Sascha Schneider, who was a gay man that was often forced to hide it considering he was born in 1870. This painting was recreated in the film to represent themes of repressed affection between men.
