That’s $103M for almost 2.3 fWAR, or about $45M per fWAR.
The free-agent market rate has been between $8m to $11m per WAR over that period, per FanGraphs.
Either the game has passed Dombrowski by, or the Phillies’ have a talent evaluation issue that’s much deeper than I feared.
As Gabriel Rincones Jr. has his first moment, it's a chance to take stock in another wayward one-year Phillies signing. They have spent $103 million on one-year MLB free agents since 2021. That has yielded 2.2 fWAR: https://t.co/txo2Iubira
@FlyorDie881019@Mrstanleycup His press conference where he said he was waiting for an offer from a competitive club, but when none came he signed with the Phillies.
Someone from the Athletic said the Phillies will not consider sending down Andrew Painter, so I’m not sure I want them making any trades if they’re that clueless. This Nola-Painter tandem averaging 5 innings is going to destroy their bullpen and they can’t see that?
Everyone in the world knows that the Phillies are desperate for a RH bat. A good front office would have made a move a month ago, but that takes away their annual excuse of “teams were asking too much” when they get squat. The game has passed Dombrowski by.9
Whoever did the psychological profile on Trea Turner before the Phillies signed him was asleep at the wheel, because he looks like he’s on the verge of crying after every terrible at bat. You can only have so much compassion for a multimillionaire who mopes like this.
@JackFritzWIP I think he’s just trying not to cry. Both at the plate and in the field, he’s a colossal disappointment. Not sure what they were thinking getting the softest SS in the league for 10 years.
Complain about Dombrowski, complain about waiting to fire Thomson, complain about the Nola, Painter, the aging roster and the relievers, but if they had a decent farm and didn't constantly whiff on their picks they would have some options for a change.
