Not a military hero — Sam Forstag was a smokejumper , an elite wildland firefighter who parachutes into remote fires, not a soldier. He spent eight years with the Forest Service, four of them jumping out of planes into Montana wilderness fires, then became a union leader for Forest Service workers. He's now the Democratic nominee for Montana's first congressional district, running against Republican Aaron Flint, an actual Army veteran. So the military hero in that race is his opponent, not him.
