Because intelligence revealed in recent weeks indicates that the Islamic Republic may have moved thousands of uranium-enrichment centrifuges into tunnels deep inside the mountain. Israel also reportedly assesses that Iran transferred part of its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to the site for further work, possibly toward weapons-grade levels. In other words, Iran may have moved both the machinery and the nuclear material needed to rebuild and advance its enrichment program into the most heavily fortified nuclear facility it has ever constructed. That is why President Trump has now said that Pickaxe Mountain will be destroyed very soon. The facility is believed to be buried more than 100 meters - approximately 330 feet - beneath solid rock. Its deepest chambers may therefore be beyond the reliable reach of America’s most powerful conventional bunker-buster, the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, also known as the MOP. The GBU-57 weighs approximately 30,000 pounds and was designed to penetrate and destroy deeply buried, hardened targets. Repeated strikes could potentially collapse tunnel entrances, ventilation shafts, access routes, electrical systems, and other supporting infrastructure. But disabling the facility from the outside and physically destroying its deepest underground chambers are two very different things. This is why some analysts believe that the only weapon capable of destroying the heart of the facility may be a nuclear earth-penetrating weapon such as the B61-11, a variable-yield nuclear gravity bomb designed for hardened underground targets. However, no one outside classified military circles can say with certainty whether such a weapon would completely destroy Pickaxe Mountain. Nor can anyone honestly guarantee minimal fallout. A nuclear ground or subsurface detonation would carry grave radiological, military, and geopolitical consequences. Other options may include repeated GBU-57 strikes, collapsing every entrance and ventilation shaft, destroying the surrounding infrastructure, sabotage, or a ground operation. Those methods might render the facility unusable without necessarily pulverizing every chamber beneath the mountain.
