No matter the sport, the importance of avoiding “Don’t Beat Ourselves” plays (turnovers, penalties, and big plays allowed on missed assignments) is one of the keys to winning playoff/championship games. Team USA’s self-inflicted miscues have torpedoed their chances today..
Taking an early look at the 2027 QB class, I can see a bunch of OC/QB coaches falling in love with Ohio State QB Julian Sayin. As a quick-rhythm passer with terrific touch, timing, and anticipation, he would be a perfect fit in a variation of the West Coast Offense that allows him to play like a pass-1st PG from the pocket. With more practice and game reps under the direction of a former NFL HC/OC (Arthur Smith), his game should be more polished than most of his peers in the class.

Watching these World Cup games come down to PKs creates all kinds of anxiety and exhilaration. I don’t know what the American Football equivalent would be, but the NFL should find a way to create an OT ending that produces the same kind of emotional reaction
Big time playmaker for the @Jaguars who should see his numbers explode. Very talented mismatch weapon who could change how opponents defend the Jags’ passing game
The Jaguars and standout TE Brenton Strange have agreed to terms on a 3 year extension worth up to $48M, with $25M guaranteed per his agents Jim Ivler, JR Roggio, and Jon Perzley @SPORTSTARSNYC
New episode of the @BleavNetwork in Bucs with @BuckyBrooks is out!

As an AD, seeing athletes post individual workouts and camp highlights on social media means very little if they are not showing up for team workouts or injured and can’t participate. Talent never outweighs accountability.
Team workouts build more than strength and skill. They build trust, chemistry, leadership, and commitment to something bigger than yourself.
Coaches must hold everyone to the same standard, regardless of talent level. If athletes consistently avoid the process, spend more time in the training room than on the field, or fail to invest in their teammates, they are showing coaches they cannot be counted on when it matters most.
Culture is built by what you allow, not by what you say. This is why teams with the most talent don’t always win the championship.
As DJ so eloquently stated, it's been a fantastic run for the MTS podcast. Partnering with a respected colleague and friend on 1K+ episodes has been a career milestone. While I will miss our on-air banter, discussions, and debates, I know our professional paths will cross again in the near future. To the fans and aspiring scouts who have enjoyed our work, I hope you will continue to support our individual projects at NFL Media, NFL Network, and ESPN. Although this chapter is closed, I'm excited about the future chapters that will be written down the road. ❤️🙏🏽
Quick pod update- I want to thank everyone who’s listened to Move The Sticks over the last decade. It’s been a blast to create shows with @BuckyBrooks (over 1k of them). He’s a fantastic partner & will always remain a close friend. We’ve had amazing producers & I appreciate them all so much. I’ll let you guys know when I finalize my new podcast home.
This is really interesting for a few different reasons. Early in my scouting career, Dick Roach told our group that the ideal secondary would feature 1 FS and 4 CBs due to the ability to match up in man coverage vs pass. He described Shawn Springs as the ideal S/CB prototype who would play in the slot because he had enough to hold up vs the run but was a suffocating coverage player on the perimeter.
As a player in the late 1990s, the Nickel or “Star” position was typically the best CB or the smartest defender due to the challenge of playing multiple roles. LeRoy Butler played that spot in Green Bay, James Hasty filled that role in KC and I watched a young Charles Woodson play there at times, but matchups dictated his alignment.
Long story short, the “Star” is one of the most important positions on the field, and the emerging trend is taking the game back to how it started with A-plus players playing in the slot.
Coach Sherman Lewis never received the proper recognition for his contributions as a coaching legend, particularly as the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers during their mid-1990s title runs. Great football mind and teacher. Rest easy, Coach ❤️🙏🏽
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sherman Lewis.
Lewis, a first-team All-American in 1963, served as an assistant coach at MSU before a decorated NFL coaching career that included four Super Bowl titles.
We send our deepest condolences to the Lewis family.
Perhaps I need to better explain what “simple” means. Easy for us, but hard for you.. To do that, the teaching and scheme must be simple enough for the players for understand and execute, while having enough diversity to challenge the QB and play caller. Changing the picture or using multiple front isn’t necessarily complex. Despite the connection to Flores and Zimmer, the teaching and concepts are likely to be simple for a young, athletic defense to master them. Otherwise, movement and chaos will only confuse the Commanders’ defenders. Time will tell what the scheme looks like based on the unit’s personnel, but Quinn has always prioritized playing fast over tricks, so I tend to lean into his history of creating a player-friendly scheme that works best for his personnel.
Great conversation with @ErinESummers on the Saints and the NFC South. If things go according to plan, Tyler Shough could become the new “King of the South” at the end of 2026 @saints
The process Shanahan discuss is fairly common around the league. Scouts spend the entire year evaluating prospects, while coaches join the process after the season. The highlight tapes are simply a snap shot of a prospect that leads to a greater discussion, if the coaches and scouts like the prospect. At that point, the group will rewatch the tapes and determine where to place the prospect on the board. Despite the head coach having final say, it’s a collaborative process that heavily involves the GM, scouts and coaches.
At the end of the day, it’s important for the team to take players who the coaches believes fits the scheme. Otherwise, you’re simply collecting players, but not building a “team” that functions effectively between the lines.
Another great conversation on the challenges of when and where to take a targeted player. Shanahan also provides a little context on how teams juggle insider information from other league personnel with Consensus Boards, etc..
