It's emotionally taxing to have my book(s) banned. But not because they're my books, but because all I can think about is the message it sends to the Black kids who see themselves in my books.
They deserve to have their stories told whether it makes you comfortable or not.
A2: I think books for young audiences are banned most often because many adults (in their infinite fear) believe it's better to shield young people than to help young people grow to become shields for others. #BannedBooksChat
Just to clarify: We care about “learning loss” but plan to disrupt learning for weeks? We care about mental health but plan to force anxious students into a building to take a test that won’t count?
Simple changes to the quality and tone of feedback matters when it comes to developing nurturing, trusting connections with students. ✨
